505 of the 1,005 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Volkswagen ID.4 2021–2026 name the electrical system (NHTSA’s “Electrical System” heading — wiring, modules, batteries, charging, infotainment and driver displays — NHTSA's broadest heading). The loudest years: 2023 (230), 2021 (178), 2022 (56). Filed under the same heading across these years: 6 manufacturer bulletins, 9 recall campaigns, 1 NHTSA investigation. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the electrical system. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

The driving and center console screens were blank at vehicle start. Vehicle went into gear properly and moved without error, however, not having a 'speedometer' at this point, I chose not to drive the car until I was able to determine the best way to restore operation to the two 'screens'.
The car shut down while driving. Many system warnings appeared sequentially stating that they were no longer functioning. The first to appear and remain as a warning light is the electrical system malfunction. It is currently orange, however, it turned red at one point. My car was unable to go into drive, nor reverse.
I was on the freeway going 70 mph. Red warning lights came on saying to stop car immediately. The car lost all power. I was able to get on the shoulder and called State Patrol because I was barely off a busy freeway. They advised me to get a tow truck. The Infotainment system was completely blank.
Driving at about 10mph in parking lot and car jolted to stop. Dash flashing electrical failure in 12v battery, service immediately. Car would not move then it released into N position and began to roll back award. Warning electrical system failure flashed in dash and had no power for 10-15 minute.
The vehicle’s forward collision warning, the land departure warning, the rear cross traffic warning, the blind spot monitoring have all been having issues since the first week of the car. I’ve taken the car into the shop over 10 times since the summer of 2022 on initial purchase.
