Toyota Tundra engine problems, 2016–2026
664 of the 1,793 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Toyota Tundra 2016–2026 name the engine (NHTSA’s “Engine” heading — the engine and its cooling system). The loudest years: 2023 (212), 2022 (201), 2024 (169). Filed under the same heading across these years: 3 manufacturer bulletins, 3 recall campaigns. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.
When the engine complaints were filed, and at what mileage

In owners’ own words

The engine has rough idle, the dealership says they see a misfire and they say is normal for the vehicle to do this, is a brand new vehicle I bought with 9 miles im at 14 thousands now, and the truck has died using the 4wd and completely turned off, i took it to the dealership and they said the same like the engine, they cleared codes…
I have lost engine power while driving highway speeds on more than one occasion. There is no consistency on when this condition occurs. The engine light comes on and the engine goes into limp mode. Under the current circumstances, my Tundra is unsafe and poses a hazard to me and communities at large.
From a dead stop, pressing the gas pedal nothing happens for 3-4 seconds and then the engine surges. Very stressful pulling out into traffic. I’ve reported it to the dealer service dept and they tell me it’s normal. This condition is not normal. It happens every day
Lots of lag when starting from a stop, a good 3-4 seconds after pressing the gas pedal, the truck will lunge forward. This is concerning when pulling out into traffic. Took to the dealer and they said "yes, we know about it, there is no fix for the delay". This is very unsafe
After coming to a stop there is an acceleration hesitation that cause the truck to take a second or two to start going again. This is very dangerous when pulling out in traffic

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?
The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
