Nissan Sentra automatic emergency braking problems, 2016–2027

227 of the 1,432 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Nissan Sentra 2016–2027 name the automatic emergency braking (NHTSA’s “Forward Collision Avoidance” heading — forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, including phantom braking). The loudest years: 2020 (76), 2021 (46), 2019 (45). Filed under the same heading across these years: no document yet. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the automatic emergency braking. Nothing here is a rate.

Forward Collision Avoidance Nov 17, 2021 NHTSA owner report
The emergency braking system has gone off on this car 4 times. After the first two we took the car into the dealership and they said that they could not find any problems with it. Yesterday we had two more incidents. I am taking the vehicle in tomorrow. I have asked that they replace the sensors but was told that it is up to Nissan.

The automated break system came on while I was driving 2 times within 3 days without anything being in front, the back or on the side of the car. When this happened there was a few beeping noise and a quick red flash on the dashboard that said maintenance.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Nissan Sentra years have the most automatic emergency braking complaints?

2020, 76; 2021, 46; 2019, 45. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2020 (37%).

Is there a recall for the automatic emergency braking on the Nissan Sentra?

No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.

When do automatic emergency braking problems show up on the Nissan Sentra?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 15,500 miles across the model years; half of them between 5,000 and 40,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Forward Collision Avoidance" heading cover?

Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, including phantom braking. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
