Mercedes-Benz C-Class fuel system problems, 2016–2027
141 of the 917 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2016–2027 name the fuel system (NHTSA’s “Fuel/Propulsion System” heading — fuel tanks, lines, pumps and injection — and on an EV, the propulsion battery and motors). The loudest years: 2016 (67), 2017 (35), 2019 (13). Filed under the same heading across these years: 1 manufacturer bulletin, 3 recall campaigns. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the fuel system. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

The vehicle has a strong gas smell when the vehicle is idling. Dealer changed the 2 fuel lines and clamps. It's common problem in w205 C300 cars. The car was under extended warranty and the dealer refused to cover it under warranty even though the car has 29k miles. There should be a recall for these fuel hoses. Sauderschelkopf.
Gas smell coming through the vents started off every now and then and became more frequent. Pulled it in the garage and the gas fumes made the total garage smell. Took it to the dealer and they said it is fuel line, that sits near the engine. It is in the shop now.
My preowned vehicle has a strong gas odor in the cabin while operating. I don’t see any safety recalls but I did read online that a class action lawsuit proved my model may have faulty fuel parts causing seepage and the watranty is extended to 10yr/120k miles.
Please see attached letter: Mercedes Benz Crankcase Valve Claim.pdf, repair estimate and other correspondence from Mercedes-Benz. This is an well-known issue where there is a gas lead from the engine where Mercedes insists doesn't pose a safety issue.
The contact owns a 2019 Mercedes-Benz C300. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power and decelerated. The accelerator pedal was depressed while attempting to accelerate. The contact stated that the fuel gauge failed to accurately display the level of fuel in the tank.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communicationsWhich Mercedes-Benz C-Class years have the most fuel system complaints?
2016, 67; 2017, 35; 2019, 13. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2022 (31%).
Is there a recall for the fuel system on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
Yes — 3 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 23V880000 (2024), 23V445000 (2023), 21V961000 (2020). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
When do fuel system problems show up on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 60,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 42,000 and 76,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.
What does NHTSA's "Fuel/Propulsion System" heading cover?
Fuel tanks, lines, pumps and injection — and on an EV, the propulsion battery and motors. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
