Jeep Compass exterior lighting problems, 2016–2026
121 of the 2,366 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Jeep Compass 2016–2026 name the exterior lights (NHTSA’s “Exterior Lighting” heading — as ODI groups the complaints it receives). The loudest years: 2018 (64), 2022 (50), 2023 (4). Filed under the same heading across these years: no document yet. Every figure is a linked federal record; none is a failure rate, none a repair cost, and none a verdict on one car.

Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the exterior lights. Nothing here is a rate.
When the exterior lighting complaints were filed, and at what mileage

In owners’ own words

Instrument panel lights will not dim on automatic lights setting or when display lights have been on for longer then 8 seconds. The dash lights and stereo lights are too bright to drive at night. Have to stop car, turn off car along with turning off all light switches.
Instrument gauge cluster lights do not dim with dimmer dial. Dash lights are bright enough to turn the windshield into a mirror at night (see insider vehicle better than outside)
Both the center digital cluster screen as well as the center radio screen have gone dim back in November 2022 and have not come back to normal brightness since. Both are not able to be seen during the daytime hours.
Center cluster on dash (fuel level, eco save meter, etc.) is stuck in night time mode. I've tried everything to reset so I can see my dash durning the day. Its so dark that I ran out of gas during the day becuase I could see my fuel level! Dealership wants my vehicle for 5 days to figure it out and they dont know what to do.
At night, the light sensors cause the GPS map screen to flash from dark mode to bright white screen when passing under street lights. Car is available for inspection. This is a safety factor in that the bright white lights flashing in the driver's eyes in the dark is very dangerous and distracting.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communicationsWhich Jeep Compass years have the most exterior lighting complaints?
2018, 64; 2022, 50; 2023, 4. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2022 (23%).
Is there a recall for the exterior lights on the Jeep Compass?
No recall campaign is filed under this heading on any of these model years. A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.
When do exterior lighting problems show up on the Jeep Compass?
Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 5,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 1,000 and 28,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.
What does NHTSA's "Exterior Lighting" heading cover?
The area of the vehicle ODI files the complaint under. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
