Electrical System Jan 5, 2022 NHTSA owner report
Randomly all electronics shut down engine stalls and lane assists wont let me turn wheel while driving in road. Normally at slow speeds. Get random warning lights that go away after seconds. When I activate a window switch all the electronics turn off and on. This happens randomly.

Driving at approx 55 to 60 MPH with rear defrost on. Began to smell a burning/electrical smell, and within 90 seconds heard a loud bang. Rear window (stationary piece on drivers side) had shattered. Smell presumably coming from the rear window defrost component. No warning lights or messages on the truck.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Are electrical problems common on the 2017 GMC Sierra?

They are documented: NHTSA holds 60 owner complaints naming the electrical system on this model year (14% of everything owners filed about it), and 538 manufacturer bulletins are filed under the same heading. Whether it is a problem on one particular car is a diagnosis, not a count, and a count says nothing about how many were sold.

Is there a recall for the electrical system on the 2017 GMC Sierra?

No recall campaign is filed under this heading for this model year (there are 6 filed under other headings). A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.

When do electrical problems show up on the 2017 GMC Sierra?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 48,000 miles; half of them between 13,000 and 70,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Electrical System" heading cover?

Wiring, modules, batteries, charging, infotainment and driver displays — NHTSA's broadest heading. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
