What the bulletin says

VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN 2016-2017 TITAN XD DIESEL; PM SENSOR INTRODUCTION Nissan is conducting this voluntary emissions recall campaign on certain specific model year 2016-2017 Titan XD vehicles equipped with a diesel engine, to install a Particulate Matter (PM) Sensor and reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM). This service will be performed at no charge to the customer for parts or labor. IDENTIFICATION NUMBER Nissan has assigned identification number PD128 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign. DEALER RESPONSIBILITY It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS) National Service History for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this voluntary emissions recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While federal law applies only to new vehicles, Nissan strongly encourages dealers to correct any used vehicles in their inventory before they are retailed.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported
Source: NHTSA complaint databaseOwners of the 2 model years this bulletin names have filed 386 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 238 of them name Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.
On the 2016 Nissan Titan XD, the 36 owners who gave an odometer reading for Engine reported it at a median of 37,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.
Purchased new 2016 Nissan Titan Xd had severe downshift problem where vehicle would shift so abruptly it would feel like you slammed on brake pedal. Today while turning left from stop light a gas truck in first lane failed to stop at traffic light. I hit the accelerator to pull away and no throttle response at all.

To whom it may concern I was driving with slightly less than 1/4 tank of gas and stopped to park on a hill with vehicle on idle. While in idle on the hill the vehicle stalled out. I tried to restart but the engine just cranked with no start and a low pressure fuel system service light came on.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is Nissan PD128 a recall?
No. A emissions communication is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.
Is the PD128 repair free?
A emissions communication is usually paid by the manufacturer on the vehicles it names, within the terms and time limit the document sets; the dealer checks the VIN against the manufacturer’s list.
Which vehicles does PD128 cover?
The manufacturer filed it against 2 model years: 2017 Nissan Titan, 2016 Nissan Titan XD. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
