What the bulletin says
Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communicationComplaint Water ingress in the load compartment between the C and D pillars. Cause In the area of the rounding at the D-pillar, a leakage may occur between the rear side wall and the roof paneling. Remedy Troubleshooting: Locate the area of the leak by performing a pressure test and using leak detector spray or soapy water. To do this, tape up the rear vents on the D-pillars and set the ventilation system to the maximum blower setting. If leaks are verified, proceed with sealing of the drip rail: 1. Remove the corner seal strip of the drip rail (see AR88.80-P-4005XG). 2. Clean and apply primer to the marked areas (see figure 1). 3. Replace the corner seal strip and fill with sealant, then mount it straight onto the flange. 4. Remove any excess adhesive and Install outer drip rail. Apply adhesive to inside corner. 5. After installing the drip rails, perform a water test (approx. 0.5 hours).

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (3 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Mercedes-Benz’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is Mercedes-Benz LI88.80-P-080031 a recall?
No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.
Is the LI88.80-P-080031 repair free?
Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mercedes-Benz warranty extension on file lists the ones Mercedes-Benz has filed.
Which vehicles does LI88.80-P-080031 cover?
The manufacturer filed it against 9 model years: 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, 2023 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
