Mazda bulletin 04-001-24a
What it saysSymptom 1: Some customers may complain about hearing a grinding noise and/or vibration occur when applying the brake. NHTSA’s full summary ↓
Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Aug 29, 2024, received Sep 4, 2024, about the service brakes. It names 13 model years (2019–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says
Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communicationWhat it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.
Symptom 1: Some customers may complain about hearing a grinding noise and/or vibration occur when applying the brake. This is due to rust on the rear brake disc plate. The brake pad has insufficient disc-rust prevention performance, resulting in the disc plate rusting. To eliminate this concern, the pad material has been improved to prevent rust on the disc surface. Symptom 2: Some vehicles may exhibit a squeal noise from the rear brakes when braking lightly while driving at a slow speed. The squeal noise is caused by the disc pad surface fluctuating.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (6 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Mazda’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported
Source: NHTSA complaint databaseOwners of the 13 model years this bulletin names have filed 430 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 48 of them name Service Brakes — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.
On the 2019 Mazda Mazda3, the 12 owners who gave an odometer reading for Service Brakes reported it at a median of 7,300 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.
These issues been happening since the second month I owned my 2019 Mazda 3 hatchback. 1- suspensions, they're very rough & harsh., they bounce so much for no reason, I damaged one tire already while I was driving on i476 normal highway where I stepped on normal pothole ended up damaging my tire, suspensions are really dangers on all…
2019 Mazda Mazda3 · Service Brakes · filed with NHTSA May 24, 2020
The automatic braking engaged without warning and without cause. There was nothing directly in front of the car that was a possible collision threat. I suffered a neck injury as a result of the force in which the car stopped. Fortunately the driver behind me was able to stop.
2021 Mazda CX-30 · Service Brakes · filed with NHTSA Jul 24, 2022
Front and rear brakes premature wear, would have failed safety inspection under 30,000 miles but brakes were inspected just outside of warranty with metal on metal. RIGHT rear coil spring snapped lower middle of coil while driving on flat even ground. Just outside of warranty

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is Mazda 04-001-24a a recall?
No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.
Is the 04-001-24a repair free?
Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.
Which vehicles does 04-001-24a cover?
The manufacturer filed it against 13 model years: 2024 Mazda CX-30, 2023 Mazda CX-30, 2022 Mazda CX-30, 2021 Mazda CX-30, 2020 Mazda CX-30, 2023 Mazda MX-30 and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: 2019-2024 Mazda3 (Japan built): built before 2 Feb 2024; 2022-2023 MX-30: built before 29 May 2023 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
