What it saysADD 1 litre / quart of engine OIL message on instruent cluster NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Land Rover filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jun 26, 2023, received Jul 10, 2023, about the power train. It names 6 model years (2021–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 6 model years this bulletin names have filed 342 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 148 of them name Electrical System, Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

Infotainment screen randomly goes black while driving. Does not come back on. This screen displays and controls everything for the vehicle. Maps, system info, music, etc. Instructions to "reset" the system consists of reaching toward the passenger side of the dashboard to hold down a power button for about 30 seconds.

The contact owns a 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The contact was notified of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V248000 (Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available.

On several occasions the vehicle shifted by itself from D to N. Leaving you stuck until you shifted into P then back to D. This is scary and potentially dangerous. Dealer has only a service bulletin, so if you complain they can hopefully fix it. But, this is dangerous should have a recall

2022 Land Rover Range Rover · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Nov 22, 2022 · ODI 11494633

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Land Rover SFCC_JUN2023_41 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SFCC_JUN2023_41 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SFCC_JUN2023_41 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 6 model years: 2023 Land Rover Defender, 2022 Land Rover Defender, 2021 Land Rover Defender, 2023 Land Rover Range Rover, 2022 Land Rover Range Rover, 2021 Land Rover Range Rover. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
