Land Rover bulletin SFCC_DEC2023_37

What it saysJLR Retailers have reported visible corrosion around the outlet of the exhaust tailpipe prior to PDI NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Land Rover filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 20, 2023, received Jan 9, 2024, about the engine. It names 5 model years (2020–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Doing the repair yourself, or pricing it before the shop does? Search the part by fitment on eBay Motors — the listing and the price are the seller’s.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 294 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 45 of them name Engine, Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The engine cut out whilst going 90kmph on a four lane freeway. I had about 10 seconds to react before it rolled to a complete stop - it wouldn't connect the gas at all. Extremely unsafe situation, other cars beeping their horns in panic as they swerved past me. Lucky to not have caused a serious collision and die today.

The 2023 Land Rover Defender said emissions fault and died in 4 lanes of busy traffic. This has happened since the first few miles but usually happens in a parking lot. The Defender also throws itself into neutral while in drive. This has happened multiple times and the car has less than $10k miles.

Since I got Certified Pre-Owned 2021 Defender 90 First Edition exactly a month ago I noticed at speeds higher than 65mph a crackling noise that sounded like sand hitting my windshield and assumed it was coming from the windshield wipers being "loose" since the noise came from both front sides.

2021 Land Rover Defender · Structure · filed with NHTSA Sep 19, 2023 · ODI 11545310

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Land Rover SFCC_DEC2023_37 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SFCC_DEC2023_37 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SFCC_DEC2023_37 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 5 model years: 2024 Land Rover Defender, 2023 Land Rover Defender, 2022 Land Rover Defender, 2021 Land Rover Defender, 2020 Land Rover Defender. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
