Hyundai filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jul 4, 2024, received Aug 7, 2024, about the electrical system — 1 document under this number: SERVICE CAMPAIGN 9B4. It names 7 model years (2020–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.

This bulletin provides the procedure to update the software for the Battery Management System (BMS) on certain Elantra Hybrid (CN7 HEV), Sonata Hybrid (DN8 HEV), and Tucson Hybrid (NX4 HEV) vehicles that may exhibit a warning light with DTC P1BB20.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (5 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Hyundai’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 7 model years this bulletin names have filed 1,502 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 329 of them name Electrical System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, the 13 owners who gave an odometer reading for Electrical System reported it at a median of 25,800 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Over the last 3 months at least a dozen times the 12v auxiliary battery is completely dead after parking the car outdoors for an hour or so. This poses a safety issue, especially at night because you cannot easily access the car. You have to fumble around trying to get the key hole cover off in order to use the key supplied in the fob.

2020 Hyundai Sonata · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Oct 1, 2024 · ODI 11617570

Three incidents of shifting from park to drive or reverse and car does not move in the drive or reverse. Turning PHEV car off seems to reset it. Third time car had a high pitch whine and trying to move in reverse caused a strong shudder and check engine light to come on. Diagnostic code for power train P072200.

2022 Hyundai Tucson · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Jan 13, 2023 · ODI 11501658

My car will power off randomly, or will seem as though there is no power. I have to revert back to the manual key to enter the vehicle and hit the 12vlt reset to power it back on. This happened at least 3 times. Once while operating the vehicle, and twice while the vehicle was left parked.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Hyundai SERVICE CAMPAIGN 910G a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SERVICE CAMPAIGN 910G repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Hyundai warranty extension on file lists the ones Hyundai has filed.

Which vehicles does SERVICE CAMPAIGN 910G cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 7 model years: 2023 Hyundai Elantra, 2022 Hyundai Elantra, 2021 Hyundai Elantra, 2022 Hyundai Sonata, 2021 Hyundai Sonata, 2020 Hyundai Sonata and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: built 15 Dec 2020 – 13 Feb 2023; built 29 Jan 2020 – 8 Mar 2023; built 20 Jan 2021 – 18 Dec 2023 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
