Ford bulletin SSM 52317

What it says2023 F-Super Duty, 2023-2024 Expedition, 2024 Nautilus/F-150 vehicles will exhibit no light emitting diode (LED) confirmation from the key fob indicating that the vehicle has remote started (or not remote started). NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Ford filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Mar 1, 2024, received Mar 20, 2024, about the electrical system. It names 10 model years (2023–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

2023 F-Super Duty, 2023-2024 Expedition, 2024 Nautilus/F-150 vehicles will exhibit no light emitting diode (LED) confirmation from the key fob indicating that the vehicle has remote started (or not remote started). Factory key fobs with remote start no longer contain a LED feedback indicator. Do not replace the key fob for this condition. This is a normal operating characteristic and no service action is necessary.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

2024 Ford Expedition · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Mar 7, 2025 · ODI 11646958

Hurricane Helene inundated our parking lot on September 27 with approximately 3-4 feet of storm surge. Many vehicles (20-25) were trapped and flooded. This vehicle caught fire and was totally consumed over the course of a 5-6 hour burn. Although all vehicles in our lot were flooded, this was the only vehicle to catch fire.

2023 Ford Expedition · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Oct 23, 2024 · ODI 11621500

Multiple electrical issues related to dashboard controls, video sensors, head unit. Controls powering down while driving, sensors throwing multiple error messages. All since 1,500 miles. Ford could not figure out what the issue was so they replaced the wiring harness. After 2 months in the shop I got my vehicle back.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford SSM 52317 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SSM 52317 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SSM 52317 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 10 model years: 2024 Ford Expedition, 2023 Ford Expedition, 2024 Ford F-150, 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty, 2023 Ford F-350 Super Duty, 2023 Ford F-450 Super Duty and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
