Ford bulletin SSM 52241

What it saysSome 2022-2024 Expedition vehicles equipped with an analog camera and a 12 inch center display screen may exhibit a rear camera image that the customer describes as grainy, fuzzy, or pixelated. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Ford filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Feb 7, 2024, received Feb 14, 2024, about the equipment. It names 3 model years (2022–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Some 2022-2024 Expedition vehicles equipped with an analog camera and a 12 inch center display screen may exhibit a rear camera image that the customer describes as grainy, fuzzy, or pixelated. This may be due to the interaction between the analog camera and the high definition digital center display screen. To confirm a vehicle is built with an analog camera and a 12 inch center display screen, verify the minor feature codes J3KAR (REAR VIEW CAMERA - LEVEL 2) and HJGAX (MULTI FUNCTION DISPLAY - 12 inch) by reviewing the build information by double-clicking the vehicle identification number (VIN) in the upper left corner in the Professional Technician System (PTS). This is an operating characteristic of the vehicle. Do not attempt any repairs for this condition.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Owners of the 3 model years this bulletin names have filed 254 complaints with NHTSA since 2015.

Bought car new last year. Current 15,000 miles. On Saturday, September 2, I turned the ignition off and then opened the drivers door. Suddenly there was a horrendous loud static noise coming from I assume the radio speakers. It was deafening, and lasted about 3 seconds.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford SSM 52241 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SSM 52241 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SSM 52241 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 3 model years: 2024 Ford Expedition, 2023 Ford Expedition, 2022 Ford Expedition. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
