GM bulletin PIT6098

What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates to the technicians that GM is aware of this issue and are root causing the concern. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 11, 2023, received Jan 29, 2024, about the electrical system. It names 6 model years across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac (2023–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

One page for every brand it was filed under. Each brand’s bulletins: Chevrolet · GMC · Cadillac.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Doing the repair yourself, or pricing it before the shop does? Search the part by fitment on eBay Motors — the listing and the price are the seller’s.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 5 model years this bulletin names have filed 555 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 132 of them name Electrical System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

The entire left portion of the screen became inoperable and remained a black screen despite attempts to reset the system. The left side of the screen contains information such as gear selection, speedometer, lane keep assist, and many other important information. There is no other way to see what speed you are going besides this screen.

2023 Cadillac Lyriq · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Dec 11, 2024 · ODI 11630145

While driving the blindside indicators will come on when nothing is there. The window switches and door lock button on the driver side door will not work when the blindside indicators are on. Also the light on the door lock button turns on and off randomly when the indicators are on with nothing there.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Dec 9, 2023 · ODI 11559287

Headlights began flickering two days after purchase of vehicle. Infotainment screen that operates the headlights, as there is no physical headlight knobs or buttons, also malfunction and is inoperable. So I can not turn my headlights on or off, they're set to auto and I can not adjust it.

2024 GMC Canyon · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Aug 5, 2024 · ODI 11606602

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT6098 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT6098 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does PIT6098 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 6 model years across 3 brands (Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac): 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, 2024 Chevrolet Colorado, 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, 2024 GMC Canyon, 2023 GMC Canyon, 2024 Cadillac Redundant Lyriq. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
