Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the engine, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

The contact owns a 2016 Acura Mdx. When the vehicle accelerated after slowing down, the transmission slipped and the vehicle stalled several times when making turns. Engine at 34,000 miles Feb 5, 2019 NHTSA owner report
2020 Acura MDX, bought this in February of 2021. Issue with the auto-idle completely turning off the engine, when you pull up to a red light or stop sign and the engine goes into Auto-idle, then go into neutral, sometimes showing the battery sign. The car is completely disabled, have to shut off the engine and restart.
Engine Oct 20, 2023 NHTSA owner report
Its a known issue with my 2020 Acura MDX it has an issue with the autoidle completely turning off the engine, so you pull up to a red light and the engine goes into Autoidle mode and then completely turns OFF the engine so you are stuck in the middle of the road for a few minutes and then you have to wait for the car to allow you to turn…
Engine Aug 24, 2023 NHTSA owner report
The vehicle stalls and loses all power when coming out of auto idle stop. This is a default feature that shuts the engine off when the vehicle stops to create fuel efficiency. But it is creating a terrible safety issue of having vehicles unexpectedly stopped on the roadway. The feature cannot be permanently turned off.

Which Acura MDX years have the most engine complaints?

2016, 171; 2020, 101; 2017, 97. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2025 (61%).

Is there a recall for the engine on the Acura MDX?

Yes — 2 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 23V751000 (2020), 19V298000 (2019). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do engine problems show up on the Acura MDX?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 60,000 miles across the model years; half of them between 28,000 and 98,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?

The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
