Two things the counts carry that are not the car: how many of each year were sold, and how long each has been on the road — an older year out-counts a newer one before anything is wrong with it. The share column is the honest comparison across years: what part of that year’s complaints named the engine. Nothing here is a rate.

In owners’ own words

Filed with NHTSA by the people who own these cars, about the engine, from the model years with the most to say. Quoted as written, with anything identifying removed; unverified reports — what was said, not a finding that it was true.

The motor completely shuts off unexpectedly while the car is in motion. Sometimes there will be a loss pf engine power and a 'stuttering' and jerking just before the stall occurs, but not always. At faster speeds there is a hard thump and sudden deceleration.

2017 Golf has been nothing but a nightmare. [1] 2018-2021, it was Infotainment system that I had to repair 3 times; once under warranty, twice out of pocket. Stupid navigation system malfunctions every time they upgrade the map or something and caused another visit to the dealer for replacing the entire radio and that little disk in the…
Engine Jul 25, 2026 NHTSA owner report
I've been experiencing a recurring issue with my vehicle where the EPC light frequently activates. When this happens, the car significantly reduces its speed, making it difficult to drive safely. I've noticed this situation over the past six to eight months, and it typically requires me to pull over.

Junction between thermostat and water pump failed leading to total loss of coolant. At the time I was driving north on I-75 in heavy morning traffic at 65 MPH. I was able to steer the vehicle off the road without hitting anyone or coming to a complete stop.

Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communications

Which Volkswagen Golf / GTI years have the most engine complaints?

2019, 181; 2017, 55; 2016, 55. Raw counts, and an older year has had longer to collect them; by share of each year's own complaints the loudest is the 2019 (64%).

Is there a recall for the engine on the Volkswagen Golf / GTI?

Yes — 4 campaigns are filed under this heading across these model years: 22V707000 (2023), 22V163000 (2022), 16V647000 (2016), 16V138000 (2016). A recall is matched by VIN, and applies to specific years; check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

When do engine problems show up on the Volkswagen Golf / GTI?

Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 800 miles across the model years; half of them between 0 and 10,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.

What does NHTSA's "Engine" heading cover?

The engine and its cooling system. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
