Counts are owner reports to NHTSA, not verified defects, and scale with how many of these were sold; nothing here is a rate. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so “Steering” means the same area of the vehicle, not one fault.

Driving the vehicle, I was turning right on exit , the steering wheels turn extremely hard. It turn so hard have to pull over on side of the road. Steering light and traction turn on. Cycle the key and vehicle reset light nothing happen. Vehicle do not give fault code after key was cycle
Total loss of power steering while driving, wheel locks up randomly. Hyundai dealer said the battery was old, I put a new hyundai battery in it and the steering locked up leaving the dealership. VERY DANGEROUS
My wife and I have been having an intermittent but constant problem with our steering mechanism which our dealer says they cannot replicate and therefore cannot resolve. This constant problem is one that MANY Sonata Hybrid owners have reported online.
I lost the ability to steer my car any more than 15 to 20 degrees in any direction while traveling at a maximum speed of 25 mph and within approximately 300 yards of driving. Once steering control became limited a warning was displayed on my dash very briefly saying my high beams were not functioning properly.
My vehicle has 65000 miles and the steering would freeze up while driving on a local street and almost had a collission. First time I noticed the problem was when my vehicle had 55000 milea and it was under warranty.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA complaint database, recalls and manufacturer communicationsAre steering problems common on the 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
They are documented: NHTSA holds 181 owner complaints naming the steering on this model year (21% of everything owners filed about it), and 49 manufacturer bulletins are filed under the same heading. Whether it is a problem on one particular car is a diagnosis, not a count, and a count says nothing about how many were sold.
Is there a recall for the steering on the 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
No recall campaign is filed under this heading for this model year (there are 5 filed under other headings). A bulletin is not a recall: it carries no federal duty to repair for free.
When do steering problems show up on the 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
Owners who gave an odometer reading reported it at a median of 55,000 miles; half of them between 23,000 and 75,000. That is when reports cluster, not the life of a part.
What does NHTSA's "Steering" heading cover?
The steering column, rack, pump and power assist. Owners choose the heading when they file, so it says which area of the vehicle the complaint is about, not which part failed.
