Volkswagen bulletin DC 60E260E5_EXP2

What it saysIn some sunroof-equipped vehicles, the front sunroof drains can become blocked with moist debris. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Volkswagen filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Mar 26, 2024, received Apr 4, 2024, about the visibility/wiper. It names 8 model years (2016–2019). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 8 model years this bulletin names have filed 2,323 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 83 of them name Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, the 24 owners who gave an odometer reading for Structure reported it at a median of 2,505 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Chrome trim around the shifter began peeling and exposed sharp edges. Sharp edges of raised trim are close to a storage cubby so there is a risk of touching them and being cut, something which has happened to me (driver). Issue has not been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer etc. No warning lamps or other symptoms were present.

The driver's side b-pillar has a rattle/creak. It's a slight ticking that happens most of the time over uneven roads or when you hit a bump; the rattle/noise happens over the smallest bump. Noise can be heard even on even roads. I've had the car since 1/31/2018 when I purchased it new, and as of today 5/12/18 has 2637 miles.

ABS/ESC/AIRBAG lights lit when vehicle started. Problem persisted for two days after rain storm. Water had been observed in the passenger footwell, and was verified to be coming from a plugged sun roof drain. Overflowing drain may contribute to body rust, mildew/mold, or electrical problems as reported

2017 Volkswagen Golf / GTI · Structure · filed with NHTSA Jun 25, 2021

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Volkswagen DC 60E260E5_EXP2 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the DC 60E260E5_EXP2 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does DC 60E260E5_EXP2 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 8 model years: 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, 2019 Volkswagen Golf / GTI, 2018 Volkswagen Golf / GTI, 2017 Volkswagen Golf / GTI, 2016 Volkswagen Golf / GTI and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
