Mazda bulletin 09-033-23

What it saysSome vehicles may exhibit that the glass run channel of the front door interferes with the rear door garnish. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Mazda filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 26, 2023, received Oct 5, 2023, about the structure. It names 6 model years (2019–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication
Built before 29 Nov 2019 “Produced before November 29, 2019”
Built on or after 29 Nov 2019 “Produced on or after November 29, 2019”

What it applies to, as the document itself states it — the build window in the manufacturer’s own words, read by machine from the PDF NHTSA serves. The build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb; the dealer settles a borderline vehicle by its VIN.

Some vehicles may exhibit that the glass run channel of the front door interferes with the rear door garnish. Since the front door glass run channel is not fixed to the door strongly enough for the following situations, cycles of door operation may result in interference and lead to damage on the seal rubber at the rear door. When the front door glass is closed, the glass run channel may be forced to move to the B pillar side. In very hot climates, the glass run channel may expand to the B pillar side.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (13 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Mazda’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

Affiliate disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you request a quote or buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Nothing on this page changes because of it.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 6 model years this bulletin names have filed 208 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 4 of them name Structure — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

Door gap between the driver's side door and the driver side rear door is too small. When temperatures exceed 75 degrees f and the car is parked in direct sunlight, the door expands and it will rub onto the rear door b pillar weatherstripping. Door becomes hard to open from the inside when this happens.

On July 1, 2025, I was involved in a severe rear-end collision while driving my 2024 Mazda3 manual hatchback. The impact was forceful enough to shatter the rear windshield, leave a deep dent in the tailgate, and bend the trailer hitch mount under the vehicle by several inches.

I was driving on the highway and decided to switch int the left lane so I sped up and heard a big bang and what sounded like my bumper being dragged against the ground. I see on my dashboard that there’s an electrical and engine malfunction so I pullover and pop the hood.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Mazda 09-033-23 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 09-033-23 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every Mazda warranty extension on file lists the ones Mazda has filed.

Which vehicles does 09-033-23 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 6 model years: 2024 Mazda Mazda3, 2023 Mazda Mazda3, 2022 Mazda Mazda3, 2021 Mazda Mazda3, 2020 Mazda Mazda3, 2019 Mazda Mazda3. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: built before 29 Nov 2019; built on or after 29 Nov 2019 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
