Ford filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Aug 30, 2023, received Sep 1, 2023, about the engine. It names 6 model years across Ford and Lincoln (2022–2023). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What it applies to, as NHTSA’s summary states it — build dates and equipment as the manufacturer filed them. The dealer checks the VIN and the build date on the door jamb; a vehicle outside the window is not covered by this bulletin.

Some 2022-2023 Bronco Sport/Escape vehicles equipped with a 1.5L engine and 2022-2023 Corsair vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine, built on 01-Sep-2022 and through 06-Apr-2023, may exhibit a low coolant level with engine oil in the coolant and/or coolant in the engine oil. This may be caused by an internal oil cooler leak. To correct this condition, follow the Service Procedure to test and replace the oil cooler.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 6 model years this bulletin names have filed 1,141 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 294 of them name Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport, the 18 owners who gave an odometer reading for Engine reported it at a median of 46,580 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

On May 10 a lighted wrench appeared on the instrument panel. The car felt as if I was loosing power. May 12 I got in the car, the wrench and check engine lights were both on. Called the dealer service department. They told me the car is not safe to drive as it cannot accelerator and will go into "limp mode".

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford TSB 23-2274 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the TSB 23-2274 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does TSB 23-2274 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 6 model years across 2 brands (Ford and Lincoln): 2023 Ford Bronco Sport, 2022 Ford Bronco Sport, 2023 Ford Escape, 2022 Ford Escape, 2023 Lincoln Corsair, 2022 Lincoln Corsair. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
