Ford bulletin SSM 54633

What it saysSome 2023-2024 Bronco Sport vehicles equipped with a 1.5L engine may exhibit an illuminated powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P130D stored in the PCM. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Ford filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Mar 6, 2026, received Mar 11, 2026, about the power train. It names 2 model years (2023–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Some 2023-2024 Bronco Sport vehicles equipped with a 1.5L engine may exhibit an illuminated powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P130D stored in the PCM. This may be caused by poor quality fuel being used in the vehicle. As stated in the Owner's Manual under FUEL QUALITY - Choosing the Right Fuel, use of any fuel for which the vehicle was not designed can impair the emission control system, cause loss of vehicle performance, and cause damage to the engine. Do not use: diesel fuel, fuels containing kerosene or paraffin, fuel containing more than 15% ethanol or E85 fuel, fuels containing methanol, fuels containing metallic-based additives, including manganese-based compound, fuels containing the octane booster additive, methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) or leaded fuel. Using leaded fuel is prohibited by law. Make sure the fuel being used in the vehicle is from a reputable fueling station. If a vehicle exhibits this condition and fuel quality is suspected, recommend draining and cleaning the fuel system, and refilling the fuel tank with good quality

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 2 model years this bulletin names have filed 266 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 134 of them name Fuel/Propulsion System, Power Train — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2023 Ford Bronco Sport, the 20 owners who gave an odometer reading for Fuel/Propulsion System reported it at a median of 36,600 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Our brand new 2023 Ford Bronco Sport was destroyed by a spontaneous under-the-hood fire that occurred within thirty days of delivery and with less than 50 miles on the odometer. An independent examination found this consistent with a fuel injector fire.

2023 Ford Bronco Sport · Fuel/Propulsion System · filed with NHTSA Jan 18, 2024

The contact owns a 2024 Ford Bronco. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact noticed a burning odor in the interior of the vehicle. The contact stated an error message indicated service 4WD was displayed.

2024 Ford Bronco Sport · Power Train · filed with NHTSA Jun 5, 2025

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford SSM 54633 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SSM 54633 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SSM 54633 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 2 model years: 2024 Ford Bronco Sport, 2023 Ford Bronco Sport. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
