GM bulletin PIT5823A

What it saysThis preliminary information discusses the possibility and repair of water entering a connector and causing fuel system electrical or battery drain concerns . NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 12, 2023, received Dec 26, 2023, about the electrical system. It names 10 model years across Chevrolet and GMC (2018–2022). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 10 model years this bulletin names have filed 2,061 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 698 of them name Fuel/Propulsion System, Electrical System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, the 35 owners who gave an odometer reading for Fuel/Propulsion System reported it at a median of 24,000 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Driving my vehicle with no warnings, messages, or symptoms on adaptive cruise control Sunday on in Michigan. I changed lanes into the right lane when the vehicle abruptly, without notification, and with force, caused braking that unexpectedly and dangerously slowed the vehicle then released braking before doing the same a moment later.

The navigation/media center will either go completely black or completely white screen even when backing up you lose the camera and can't shut off the radio. If the screen goes white during evening driving the reflection of the windshield is so severe I can't drive and the system will not shut off when the power button is depressed.

2018 GMC Terrain · Electrical System · filed with NHTSA Jan 28, 2019 · ODI 11172503

When starting the vechile most times the radio will turn on at 75% its max volume. On occassion this will keep the backup camera on and lose all ability to control the infotainment center on the vechile. I also turn my raidio off before I exit the vechile. This occurs when bluetooth connected phone is in car and not in the car.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5823A a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5823A repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does PIT5823A cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 10 model years across 2 brands (Chevrolet and GMC): 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, 2020 Chevrolet Equinox, 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, 2022 GMC Terrain and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
