If a communications fault were to occur, the DTC will remain set with the Malfunction Indicator Light (Check Engine Light) illuminated even if the condition resolves. Clearing the DTC with a service tool will not clear the permanent status of the DTC which could result in an emissions Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test failure. Dealers are to reprogram the ECM.
