Cadillac bulletin N232412712

What it saysService Update - Certain vehicles with a 2.0L engine have an Engine Control Module (ECM) that may not properly diagnose, may not set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), or may not illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light… NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Cadillac filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Dec 5, 2023, received Dec 6, 2023, about the engine. It names 2 model years (2021). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says

What the dealer does Dealers are to reprogram the ECM.

Picked out of NHTSA’s summary below, word for word. The document itself is the record, and the dealer checks the VIN.

Engine 2.0L “Service Update - Certain vehicles with a 2.0L engine have an Engine Control Module (ECM) that may not properly diagnose, may not set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), or may not illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light…”

What it applies to, as NHTSA’s summary states it — build dates and equipment as the manufacturer filed them. The dealer checks the VIN and the build date on the door jamb; a vehicle outside the window is not covered by this bulletin.

Service Update - Certain vehicles with a 2.0L engine have an Engine Control Module (ECM) that may not properly diagnose, may not set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), or may not illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (Check Engine Light) if certain fault conditions of the catalytic converter were to occur. Owners who have accepted applicable terms and conditions will have the opportunity to accept these software changes using wireless over-the-air (OTA) technology without having to bring their vehicle to a dealership. Alternatively, owners may have their vehicle serviced at a GM dealer to receive these software updates. Dealers are to reprogram the ECM.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (5 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Cadillac’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Doing the repair yourself, or pricing it before the shop does? Search the part by fitment on eBay Motors — the listing and the price are the seller’s.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 2 model years this bulletin names have filed 37 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 17 of them name Electrical System, Engine — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

While driving on a very busy highway going downhill when suddenly the vehicle started feeling abnormal like it was going to turn off automatically, heard an abnormal grinding noise coming from the engine the vehicle dropped speed drastically and the check engine light turned on , luckily we were on a part of the road where I merged…

valve body failed and was supposedly repaired. I had the car 1 day and valve body failed again. My car has been in the shop since November 4, 2024 with no estimated time of repair because no parts are available. I was told they would replace the transmission. That has not happened yet. No parts available.

Both front doors will no longer open from the outside. The button on the inside of the door handle doesn't respond when pushed and that is the only way to get in the car without rolling the windows down or using the emergency key.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Cadillac N232412712 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the N232412712 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way. Every GM warranty extension on file lists the ones GM has filed.

Which vehicles does N232412712 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 2 model years: 2021 Cadillac CT4, 2021 Cadillac CT5. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
