Off-road vehicles are not regulated by the highway safety agency, yet most makers file their 17-character VINs with NHTSA's database anyway, and those decode here. Paste the number from the frame and see the model year, maker, model and engine on file. Where the maker did not file, the page tells you so rather than guessing.

On the frame
Stamped into the frame tube: on many ATVs the left front rail or under the front rack; on side-by-sides often the frame near the driver's footwell or under the seat. The owner's manual gives the exact spot.
Certification label
A label on the frame repeats the VIN with the model year and, on UTVs, the gross weight rating.
Dirt bikes
As on a road motorcycle: the steering head, right side, behind the fork.
What a VIN decode cannot tell you
Source: free federal toolsEverything the decoder shows is what the manufacturer built and filed with the federal government. What happened afterwards — title brands, odometer readings at each transfer, insurance total-loss and salvage records — lives in state DMV records, which reach the public through the federal NMVTIS system. WhichTrim does not sell those reports and takes no commission from anyone who does.
Off-road vehicles are the Consumer Product Safety Commission's, not NHTSA's. ATV, UTV and dirt-bike recalls are published at cpsc.gov, and a decode here does not check them.

A consumer report from either is built on their own private sources, not on the federal title system, which is why the two can disagree about the same vehicle.

Yes. Makers assign 17-character VINs to ATVs, side-by-sides and dirt bikes in the same format as road vehicles, and most file the decode with NHTSA's vPIC database even though NHTSA does not regulate off-road use. That is why many decode here and a few do not.
Why did my ATV not decode?
Because the maker did not file that pattern with NHTSA, which they are not required to do for an off-road vehicle. The VIN is still valid — check it against the maker's own owner portal or dealer.
Where are ATV recalls published?
At the Consumer Product Safety Commission, cpsc.gov, not at NHTSA. Off-road vehicles are consumer products in federal law. The recall card below points there.
