Problem Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain 2017 Yamaha YZFR3 motorcycles. The affected motorcycles, intended for the US market, may have been manufactured with a Canadian Motor Vehicle Certification Label. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification." Risk If the stamped vehicle identification number (VIN) does not match the VIN on the Vehicle Certification Label, owners may be unable to tell if their vehicle is under an important safety recall. Fix Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Vehicle Certification Label, free of charge. The recall began July 21, 2017. Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926. Yamaha's number for this recall is 990115.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 990115 is the number Yamaha assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 17V423000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
