Problem Vermeer Manufacturing Company (Vermeer) is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 BC900XL wood chippers manufactured June 8, 2012, to May 31, 2016. The chassis of the affected wood chippers may have improper welds which could result in separation of the wood chipper from the tow vehicle. Risk If the brush chipper separates from the tow vehicle, there would be an increased risk of a crash. Fix Vermeer will notify owners, and dealers will remove the current fixed tongue and bolt on a new fixed tongue, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2016. Owners may contact Vermeer customer service at 1-800-829-0051 extension 7060. Vermeer's number for this recall is IK3304.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. IK3304 is the number Vermeer assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 16V378000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
