Problem Spartan Motors USA (Spartan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Spartan Specialty K2 vehicles. The park brake systems on these chassis may not be able to prevent the vehicles from moving unintentionally if parked on a grade. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems." Risk If the vehicle moves unintentionally while parked on a grade, it could increase the risk of a crash. Fix Spartan will notify the Entegra motorhome owners, and Spartan dealers will install new brake chambers, free of charge. The recall began September 11, 2018. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008. Spartan's number for this recall is 18023.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 18023 is the number Spartan assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 18V538000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Which vehicles does 18023 cover?

2018–2019 Spartan K2, 274 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.
