Problem Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2009-2010 Cube vehicles. The driver’s air bag inflator may rupture or detach from the steering wheel during air bag deployment. Risk A driver's air bag that ruptures or detaches can strike the driver or other occupants, increasing the risk of injury during a crash. Fix Dealers will inspect the front air bag inflator serial number, and replace the inflator as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 9, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan's number for this recall is R26A1. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning April 14, 2026.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. R26A1 is the number Nissan assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 26V230000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR Part 573

Is R26A1 the same recall as 26V230000?

Yes. R26A1 is Nissan’s own number for it; 26V230000 is NHTSA’s. One recall, two references.

Which vehicles does R26A1 cover?

2009–2010 Nissan Cube, 47,928 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.

Does the R26A1 repair cost anything?

No. The manufacturer must remedy a safety defect at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from first sale.
