Problem New Flyer Industries Ltd. (New Flyer) is recalling certain 2018 XDE60 and XD40, 2018-2019 XN40, and 2019 XE60 heavy duty urban transit buses. The affected vehicles are equipped with an AS-3 tempered glass panel in the rooftop emergency escape hatch that may shatter in extreme cold temperatures. Risk If the roof hatch glass shatters, glass particles could fall down onto passengers, increasing the risk of injury. Fix New Flyer has notified owners, and dealers will replace the tempered glass panel, free of charge. The recall began on March 6, 2019. Owners may contact New Flyer customer service at 1-204-224-6706. New Flyer's number for this recall is R19-002.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. R19-002 is the number NEW Flyer assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 19V100000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR Part 573

Is R19-002 the same recall as 19V100000?

Yes. R19-002 is NEW Flyer’s own number for it; 19V100000 is NHTSA’s. One recall, two references.

Which vehicles does R19-002 cover?

2018–2019 NEW Flyer XD40 and 3 other NEW Flyer models, 172 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.

Does the R19-002 repair cost anything?

No. The manufacturer must remedy a safety defect at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from first sale.
