Problem Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Titan vehicles manufactured from February 25, 2015, through February 12, 2016. The bolt connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower steering shaft may not properly secure the upper steering shaft, which can lead to separation of the steering shaft. Risk Separation of the steering shaft will result in complete loss of steering which may lead to a vehicle crash. Fix Mack strongly recommends that the affected vehicles not be driven until the interim remedy is applied. An interim notice was sent to Mack owners on March 21, 2016, and an interim repair is available now. A second notice was mailed on May 12, 2016. The final remedy is now available. Both remedies will be free of charge. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-877-800-4945 opt #1. Mack's number for this recall is SC0401.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. SC0401 is the number Mack assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 16V156000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR Part 573

Is SC0401 the same recall as 16V156000?

Yes. SC0401 is Mack’s own number for it; 16V156000 is NHTSA’s. One recall, two references.

Which vehicles does SC0401 cover?

2016–2017 Mack Titan (td), 75 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.

Does the SC0401 repair cost anything?

No. The manufacturer must remedy a safety defect at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from first sale.
