Problem Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2016 International DuraStar, 2018-2020 and 2023-2024 International 1300FBC Stripped chassis, 2019-2022 IC Bus CE Commercial bus, 2019-2024 IC Bus TC Commercial bus, and 2019-2024 International MV vehicles. The brake pressure switch assembly may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch's electrical components and cause an electrical short-circuit. Risk An electrical short in the brake pressure switch can overheat the circuit and increase the risk of a fire while driving or parked. Fix Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch and if necessary, the wire harness or fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 29, 2023. Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 23517 is the number International assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 23V397000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR Part 573

Is 23517 the same recall as 23V397000?

Yes. 23517 is International’s own number for it; 23V397000 is NHTSA’s. One recall, two references.

Which vehicles does 23517 cover?

2016–2024 IC BUS and International, 6,786 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.

Does the 23517 repair cost anything?

No. The manufacturer must remedy a safety defect at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from first sale.
