Problem Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2019-2020 IC Bus CE school buses equipped with hydraulic brakes. The brake pressure switch on these buses may become stuck possibly resulting in a false fault code and brake warning light on the instrument cluster. Risk A false code or a brake warning light may lead a driver to immediately pull over to transfer passengers to another bus, which can increase the risk of injury. Additionally, if the driver is aware that the warning is false, they may continue to use the bus, and in the event of an actual brake system problem, the driver will not be warned, increasing the risk of a crash. Fix Navistar has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any switch found from the suspect lot, free of charge. The recall began January 30, 2019. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 18520.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 18520 is the number IC BUS assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 18V902000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
