Problem Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2015-2018 IC Bus RE commercial buses. The drop hose fittings for the air brakes may not be oriented correctly, and, as a result, the brake hoses may contact the tire when the wheels are turned to the limit. Risk Contact with the tires may damage the service brake air hose, causing the brakes to become inoperative or lengthening the distance needed to stop the bus, increasing the risk of a crash. Fix Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will reposition the drop hose fittings and replace any damaged drop hose or wheel speed sensor harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 21, 2017. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-331-332-4331. Navistar's number for this recall is 17511.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 17511 is the number IC BUS assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 17V661000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
