Problem Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2016-2017 IC Bus CE school buses manufactured June 15, 2015, to May 20, 2016, and RE school buses manufactured June 18, 2015, to April 27, 2016. These buses may have been manufactured without reflective outline tape around the emergency exit roof hatches. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 217, "Bus Emergency Exits and Window Retention and Release." Risk Absence of the reflective outline tape may reduce conspicuity of the emergency exit roof hatches, reducing the ability of emergency personnel to identify and gain access to the emergency roof hatches, possibly increasing the passenger's risk of personal injury or death during an emergency. Fix Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will install reflective tape around the roof hatch, free of charge. The recall began n July 18, 2016. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 16505.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 16505 is the number IC BUS assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 16V454000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR Part 573

Is 16505 the same recall as 16V454000?

Yes. 16505 is IC BUS’s own number for it; 16V454000 is NHTSA’s. One recall, two references.

Which vehicles does 16505 cover?

2016–2017 IC BUS Cesb and 1 other IC BUS model, 1,787 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.

Does the 16505 repair cost anything?

No. The manufacturer must remedy a safety defect at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from first sale.
