Problem Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain model year 2016 IC CE commercial buses manufactured from November 24, 2014, to January 20, 2016. In the affected vehicles, the hood straps used to latch the hood closed may become elongated and not return to their original length. As a result, the hood may open unexpectedly when the bus is braking. Risk If the hood opens while braking, the driver's vision may be obstructed, increasing the risk of a crash. Fix Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the hood straps, free of charge. The recall began on April 18, 2016. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 16503.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 16503 is the number IC BUS assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 16V090000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
