Problem Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2014.5-2016 Dyna Low Rider motorcycles (FXDL 103) manufactured January 6, 2014 to April 7, 2016. In the affected motorcycles, engine vibrations may damage the ignition switch internally and, as a result, the engine may shut off while riding. Risk If the engine shuts off, the motorcycle would stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Fix Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will install an improved ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on June 3, 2016. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0168.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 0168 is the number Harley-Davidson assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 16V283000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
