Problem Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2021 Freightliner Custom Chassis MC, Business Class M2, Custom Chassis MBC Chassis, Custom Chassis S2 Chassis, Custom Chassis MT55 Chassis, and 2022 Custom Chassis Saf-T-Liner C2 vehicles. The hydraulic caliper tie bar support fasteners on the steer axles may not have been properly tightened or the tie bar may have not been installed in some cases. Risk A dangling tie bar could come in contact with the rotating wheel-end components or damage may occur from the brake parts flexing. Either scenario may increase the risk of a crash. Fix DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect both steer axle wheel-ends to make sure that the four tie bar mounting fasteners are properly tightened. If the required tie bar is missing, the caliper anchor mounts and functionality (brake pad slide pins and pad movement) will be inspected before installing a tie bar. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began February 18, 2021. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-871.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. FL-871 is the number Fccc assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 20V807000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR Part 573

Is FL-871 the same recall as 20V807000?

Yes. FL-871 is Fccc’s own number for it; 20V807000 is NHTSA’s. One recall, two references.

Which vehicles does FL-871 cover?

2021–2022 Fccc, Freightliner and Thomas Built Buses, 80 vehicles by the manufacturer’s count. A recall covers a build range, so the VIN decides whether one particular vehicle is in it.

Does the FL-871 repair cost anything?

No. The manufacturer must remedy a safety defect at no charge for vehicles up to 15 years old from first sale.
