Problem Custom Fire Apparatus, Inc. (Custom Fire) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Gladiator, Metro Star, FC-94 vehicles. After the fire truck is reversed, the transmission control module (TCM) may fail to achieve the 4th gear transmission lockup needed to initiate the water pump. Risk Failure to achieve 4th gear lock up may result in unexpected vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, the water pump will not operate which can increase the risk of injury in an emergency. Fix Dealers will update the TCM software, free of charge. Both vehicles were repaired in May 2023. Owners may contact Custom Fire customer service at 1-715-294-2555.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. 23V156 is the number Custom Fire assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 23V316000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
