Problem Altec Industries Inc. (Altec) is recalling certain 2005-2016 TA37M, TA41M, TA45M telescoping aerial devices. The winch brake on these vehicles may be improperly oriented, possibly resulting in unexpected winch line movement. Risk If the winch boom line unexpectedly moves, there may be an increased risk of injury. Fix Altec will notify owners, and dealers will reverse the direction of the winch brake and check and adjust the winch brake torque setting, free of charge. The recall began on March 15, 2017. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-205-991-7733. Altec's number for this recall is CSN 643.

Two numbers, one recall

Every safety recall carries two identifiers. CSN 643 is the number Altec assigned in its own system: it is what appears on the owner letter, on the dealer’s service screen and on the repair order. 17V009000 is the number NHTSA filed the same recall under when the manufacturer reported it, and it is the one every federal record, this site included, is keyed on.

The repair is free by federal law for vehicles up to fifteen years old. Whether one particular vehicle is included is settled by its VIN against the manufacturer’s build list, not by its model year.

Check one specific vehicle

Both lookups check a VIN against the manufacturer’s own list and say whether the repair is still outstanding on that vehicle.
