Subaru bulletin 09-129-24R

What it saysIn the interest of customer satisfaction, Subaru of America, Inc. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

Subaru filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jan 7, 2025, received Jan 3, 2025, about the fuel/propulsion system — 2 documents under this number. It names 23 model years (2017–2020). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) is extending the Warranty coverage time period for the fuel pump impeller to 15 years.

Read by machine from the document NHTSA serves (7 pages), read Sep 30, 2026. A part number is shown only where it matches Subaru’s own catalogue shape, an operation only with its code and time, and a description only where the reader got it whole; anything it could not settle is left out, and the PDF is the record. Times are the manufacturer’s warranty allowances, not a quote. Listings and prices on eBay Motors are the seller’s.

Affiliate disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you request a quote or buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Nothing on this page changes because of it.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 23 model years this bulletin names have filed 6,277 complaints with NHTSA since 2015. 73 of them name Fuel/Propulsion System — the same broad component group this bulletin is filed under. NHTSA groups complaints coarsely, so that means the same area of the vehicle, not necessarily the same fault.

On the 2018 Subaru Outback, the 29 owners who gave an odometer reading for Fuel/Propulsion System reported it at a median of 5,950 miles. That figure is one model year’s, not the whole range this bulletin covers — medians from different model years are not averaged.

Car stopped running while driving down the street. Automobile was towed to dealer yesterday (9-11-19). Dealer, called today (9-12-19) said problem is a bad fuel pump and may take up to a month to get the ordered part delivered and installed. New vehicle purchased april, 2019 a little less than 2800 miles on odometer

2019 Subaru Impreza · Fuel/Propulsion System · filed with NHTSA Sep 12, 2019

I was driving on the freeway when the car stalled three times; the check engine light came on, then turned off. White, sweet smelling smoke began coming out of the engine. I pulled over safely. Upon inspection of the car, it was found that the valve spring cover came out of the right side (passenger) engine head.

2017 Subaru BRZ · Fuel/Propulsion System · filed with NHTSA Oct 17, 2020

On june 6, 2019, we took our car in for regular maintenance and to perform two outstanding recalls that involved "software reprogramming" -- one for the fuel gauge (which apparently may not properly reflect low gas levels) and one for the head unit (which may fail to initialize and activate the backup camera).

2018 Subaru Legacy · Fuel/Propulsion System · filed with NHTSA Jun 17, 2019

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Subaru 09-129-24R a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the 09-129-24R repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does 09-129-24R cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 23 model years: 2020 Subaru Ascent, 2019 Subaru Ascent, 2020 Subaru BRZ, 2019 Subaru BRZ, 2018 Subaru BRZ, 2017 Subaru BRZ and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone. The document itself sets the build window: 2018-2020 Impreza: built 3 May 2018 – 31 May 2019; 2018-2020 Outback: built 25 Jun 2018 – 18 Oct 2019; 2018-2020 Legacy: built 25 Jun 2018 – 18 Oct 2019 — the build date is on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
