GM bulletin PIT6040
What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates an issue where the aux switch "on" LED indicators do not illuminate within the aux switch if more than one aux switch is turned on. NHTSA’s full summary ↓
GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Jul 12, 2023, received Aug 21, 2023, about the exterior lighting. It names 4 model years across Chevrolet and GMC (2023–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

What the bulletin says
Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communicationPicked out of NHTSA’s summary below, word for word. The document itself is the record, and the dealer checks the VIN.
This Preliminary information communicates an issue where the aux switch "on" LED indicators do not illuminate within the aux switch if more than one aux switch is turned on. The aux switches do work regardless of how many are turned on, but the "on" LED indicator will only be illuminated in which ever aux switch is first pressed. Dealers are to reprogram the BCM to correct this concern.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

The GM brake controller will disconnect with the trailer being pulled. You get a message on the information center that the brake controller has lost connection with the trailer or no trailer brakes are available, something to that effect. This has happened up to 5 times in one day. You never know when this will happen.

I drove from California to ohio after I bought the truck, I noticed that when stopping to get gas my tailgate was open without me touching it. I drove with cameras showing the truck bed to see what happened and I watched it do it again while driving the vehicle, it just opened on its own while driving.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions
Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5Is GM PIT6040 a recall?
No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.
Is the PIT6040 repair free?
Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.
Which vehicles does PIT6040 cover?
The manufacturer filed it against 4 model years across 2 brands (Chevrolet and GMC): 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, 2023 GMC Sierra, 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
