GM bulletin PIT5854B

What it saysThis Preliminary information communicates information on vehicle speed being limited due to aftermarket lower kit being installed on the vehicle. NHTSA’s full summary ↓

GM filed this with NHTSA as a service bulletin dated Sep 4, 2024, about the vehicle speed control. It names 18 model years across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac (2021–2024). A service bulletin is not a safety recall: it is the manufacturer telling its dealers how to diagnose or repair a condition, and whether the work is paid for depends on the warranty in force. Quoting the number at a service desk can save a diagnosis.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Doing the repair yourself, or pricing it before the shop does? Search the part by fitment on eBay Motors — the listing and the price are the seller’s.

What owners reported

Source: NHTSA complaint database

Owners of the 17 model years this bulletin names have filed 3,454 complaints with NHTSA since 2015.

I was driving with my children in tow. My "reduced acceleration light" came on as well as my check engine light. Within minutes of these turning on, my car went into Limp mode (shifted in neutral) and would not accelerate and steering felt locked up. I quickly got off to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle.

2022 Cadillac Escalade · Vehicle Speed Control · filed with NHTSA Mar 17, 2025

The Forward Collision Warning system will shut off while driving and an error message will appear. Also, the entire dashboard and radio goes blank and restarts while driving. Also, the backup camera often does not work, instead of an image the screen will flash purple then go black without any image at all.

2024 Cadillac Escalade · Vehicle Speed Control · filed with NHTSA Aug 29, 2026

The frunk latch on the vehicle becomes faulty and does not recognize the hood being latched and secure when it is. While driving, the vehicle without warning will immediately limit speed to 26mph regardless of existing vehicle speed.

A complaint is one owner’s account, not a defect finding, and a bulletin is not a recall. Nothing here says this bulletin was issued because of these complaints, or that the repair it describes fixed them. Complaint files on this site begin in 2015.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is GM PIT5854B a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the PIT5854B repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does PIT5854B cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 18 model years across 3 brands (Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac): 2024 Cadillac Escalade, 2023 Cadillac Escalade, 2022 Cadillac Escalade, 2021 Cadillac Escalade, 2024 Chevrolet Suburban, 2022 Chevrolet Suburban and more. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
