What the bulletin says

Source: NHTSA's summary of the manufacturer's communication

Some 2024 F-150 vehicles may exhibit a condition where the volume is limited to 14 with a "MyKey volume limited" message in the center display screen. To resolve this concern, disconnect the vehicle's 12-volt battery cables for 10 minutes and reconnect. For hybrid vehicles, disconnect the vehicle's primary 12-volt battery and the auxiliary battery located under the rear seat. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 414-01. If a battery reset does not resolve this solution inform customers that engineering is currently working on a solution. Monitor Professional Technician System (PTS) for additional information and schedule service appointments for customers once the repair becomes available. If a customer's vehicle exhibits this concern, submit a Vehicle Concern Report. To submit a report, click on the "Submit Global Concern Report (GCR)" link at the upper right of the PTS Vehicle ID screen (vehicle identification number ÝVIN¨ required) and fill out the form. Include the article number of this message in the text of the form. Do not use the "Report A Problem" link to submit a report for this condition.

The summary is NHTSA’s abstract of the document, as filed under 49 CFR 579.5. One communication is usually filed as several documents — the bulletin, a dealer notice, an owner letter — and the number on any of them finds this page. A PDF link is shown only once NHTSA’s own server has been seen to serve that document; the rest are checked over the following nights. Quote the number at a service desk; it is what the dealer’s system is keyed on.

Common questions

Source: NHTSA, 49 CFR 579.5

Is Ford SSM 54838 a recall?

No. A service bulletin is a manufacturer communication filed with NHTSA under 49 CFR 579.5; a safety recall carries an NHTSA campaign number (two digits, a letter, six digits) and a federal duty to repair for free. Check the vehicle’s recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or on its page here.

Is the SSM 54838 repair free?

Not automatically. A service bulletin describes how to diagnose or repair a condition; who pays depends on the warranty in force, any extension, and the dealer. Quoting the number can save a diagnosis either way.

Which vehicles does SSM 54838 cover?

The manufacturer filed it against 1 model year: 2024 Ford F-150. Whether one particular vehicle is affected is a matter of its VIN and its build, not its model year alone.
